Opera VPN Not Working – How To Fix It

Opera web browser comes with the free built-in VPN or Virtual Private Network. But as many times as we try to connect it, Opera VPN is stuck on ‘connecting’ forever and ever. You are in a luck if you’re facing the same issue because we’ve found a solution that works.

VPN or Virtual Private Network allows us to browse the web anonymously. But the Anti-virus program or the firewall may block the Virtual Private Network for security reasons. The problem lies not in the Opera VPN, but with the Anti-virus program or the firewall. This is one of the most common VPN connection issues. To fix the problem “Opera VPN not working”, we’ll add the Opera VPN URL to the list of Anti-virus exclusions, to be excluded from scanning and from all shield protection. Here’s how to do it.

I’m using Windows 10 and Avast Anti-virus program, but the solution remains the same for any other Anti-virus program. The idea is to add the Opera VPN URL to the list of exclusions to keep it from all the scanning and shielding programs.

Opera VPN Not Working – How To Fix It

  • Open the Anti-virus program you’re using. Move on to the Settings page.

  • Find “Exclusions”.
  • Under the tab URLs. Add “https://www.operavpn.com*” (without quotes).
  • “OK” to confirm.

Now Opera VPN should connect without any hiccups.

However, the other workaround is to completely shut-off the web-shield feature in the Anti-virus program, but it isn’t risk-free since malware is on the rise and you should be shielded from any attacks unknown.

These are the steps demonstrated on Windows 10 and Avast Anti-virus program. On the same lines, you could fix the “Opera VPN not working” issue with any given Operating System and the Anti-virus program.

      Hi,

While you’re at it, please try this as well.
      1. Open the Anti-virus program you’re using.
      2. Turn off the web-shield for a while.
      3. Open Opera web browser. Connect to the VPN now.
      4. Once connected, turn-on the Anti-virus web-shield.

Thank you! This worked perfect using AVG’s Free AntiVirus! The instructions from the article didn’t have it working immediately, but after adding operavpn.com as an exception and reseting web-shield, it worked perfectly! 👍 Thanks again!

I dont use Avast or any anti-virus and ive tried everything(turn off firewall , clear cookies,…) but still not fixed.

Please turn off the web-shield for a while in case you’re using any other Antivirus program. Also, you’ll have to let go off any Public DNS service(Google Public DNS or OpenDNS) you’re using to make the Opera VPN work.

Opera browser not working at all. It was fine until the last update on Dec 19, 2017.

  4. Paul says:

Opera VPN not working since about December 19, 2017 as “Buddy” reports. Have testing on on PCs and Macs without anti-virus or malware protection nor any firewall settings set. First, as a US person, the VPN used to connect to Canadian servers first, but not seems stuck on European or Asia servers
